Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery
Most common reason for thyroid and parathyroid surgery in dogs is cancer. Most of the parathyroid tumors are benign and most of the thyroid tumors are malignant. If diagnosis and surgical surgical treatment are done early on, a cure can be achieved. Benign tumors of the parathyroid carry a an excellent prognosis however, close monitoring of the patient´s blood work is necessary in most cases to identify and treat a dangerous drop on calcium levels. The surgical fee for these procedures at VSO is NOK 30 000,- and includes IV catheter, general anesthesia and pre- and post-op pain medication. Not included in this fee is any follow up appointments as most clients choose to have these done at their local veterinarian. Also, in the case of a parathyroid tumors, patients might have to be transferred to a 24/7 veterinary hospital for monitoring of the calcium levels overnight.
