Patella Luxation
Patella (or knee cap) can luxate medially or laterally. There are 4 grades of patella luxation. Grade 1 is non surgical as tthere are no symptoms. Grade 2 becomes surgical when lameness and pain are impairing the quality of life of the patient and grades 3 and 4 are surgical. There are several surgical techniques that must be combined during surgery to minimize the chances of patella reluxation and the most common techniques include making the track where the patella runs (femoral trochlea) deeper, align the patella tendon by moving its insertion on the tibia and releasing any scar tissue on the side of the luxation and tightening the soft tissues on the opposite side of the luxation. Most patients with a grade medial patella luxation have excellent outcome after surgery and regain good quality of life.
