Perineal Hernia

Perineal hernia is a weakness of the muscles of the pelvic diaphragm. It affects more intact males in their middle-age to senior years. But females and younger dogs can also be affected. The weak muscles of the pelvic diaphragm do hold the abdominal organ in the belly and abdominal fat, prostate, intestines and/or bladder can escape their normal location and lodge under the skin, on either side of the anus (perineal area), making a bulging on that area. This condition can become an emergency if the bladder or a twisted bowel gets entrapped there so it should be surgically treated as soon as possible. Here at VSO the fee for elective perineal hernia treatment is NOK 30 000,- and includes IV catheter, general anesthesia, pre- and post-op pain medication. Not included in this fee is any follow up appointments as most clients choose to have these done at their local veterinarian.
