Spleen is an abdominal organ that functions as a reservoir of blood cells. Different from humans, the spleen does not have significant immunologic function in the dog and can be removed without long term consequences. The most common reason for removal of the spleen is cancer affecting this organ and senior dogs are more at risk. Masses in the spleen can become quite large and cause serious internal bleeding, even if they are benign. Removal of the spleen, in case of a benign mass, can result in a cure in of the operated patients. 2/3 of these patients are affected by malignant cancer so surgery is intended to prevent serious internal bleeding, confirm diagnosis and promote good quality of time up to 1 year when chemotherapy is also employed.

The fee for this procedure is NOK 25 000.- and include surgery, IV catheter, close monitoring for irregular heart beat during and after surgery, a common condition with this disease.
